Tears flowed freely in Ajah area of Lagos State yesterday when a vehicle crushed five pupils.
The five deceased, who were pupils of Ikota Primary School were said to be on their way to school when a water tanker ran into them, killing them in the process.
The accident occurred in Ajah, along the Lagos-Epe expressway at about 8am.
Protest trailed the death of the pupils as irate youths barricaded the expressway for many hours, requesting for the state Governor, Babatunde Fashola to visit the scene and appreciate why pedestrian bridge should be built in the area to stop further fatal accident.
It took the Area ‘J’ Elemoro Commander, Mr Obagunde several hours to convince the mammoth crowd to leave the expressway as he appealed with them not to take the law into their hands.
A man, who identified himself as Ibrahim, said the children were crossing the expressway when the accident happened.
He said the gory sight of the crushed children in the pool of blood made witnesses to shed tears.
A police source at the Ajah divisional police station who spoke on the condition of anonymity said the police had removed the corpses from the scene and deposited them at the mortuary.
He said the driver of the tanker wanted to escape after the accident but was apprehended by the police who are still investigating the cause of the accident.
The Lagos state police public relations officer, Ngozi Braide while confirming the story to LEADERSHIP, said only one of the pupils was killed while two who were injured were taken to the hospital.
