In line with a presidential directive, the Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) is set to partner with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to create a comprehensive database of all Nigerians by December 2013.
Speaking during an advocacy visit by the Institute, the Chapter Chairman, Ohaeri Osondu, disclosed the willingness of the NIPR to utilise its forthcoming Annual General Meeting/Conference as a platform to capture all public relations practitioners in the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and the private sector as part of its corporate social responsibility towards achieving the national goal of capturing all Nigerian on the database of the NIMC.
According to Ohaeri, this initiative is pursuant to the Institute’s perception of qualitative public service and good governance as pivotal to the success of the cultural, political and socio-economic transformation of Nigeria towards achieving the vision 20:2020 goals.
In a statement made available on Sunday, he added that the Federal Capital Territory chapter of NIPR remains committed to an advocacy drive towards engendering best practises and people-oriented governance in the nation’s capital.
“We all know the numerous benefits of a reliable data base, which to a large extent, enhances national planning, equitable distribution of resources among the citizenry and veritable tool for socio-economic growth,” he said.
Speaking further about the Annual General Meeting themed ‘Re-defining Nigeria’s Image: the Role of Public Relations’, the NIPR Chairman added: “It is pertinent to mention that the deteriorating image of the country in particular, may be borne out of ignorance, misunderstanding and paucity of efforts at projecting positive ideals and ethical values that can enhance international best practices and positive image for our country, hence the choice of this theme in order to engage eminent personalities from the public sector and academia to brainstorm on issues bordering on Nigeria’s integrity within global circles.”
Responding, the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission, Chris Onyemenam, commended the Abuja Chapter of the NIPR for taking the bold step of integrating the registration of public relations practitioners in the FCT into its Annual conference slated for November this year.
Onyemenam described the partnership as a “value adding measure which will, no doubt, provide extensive mileage for the collective drive to develop a modern and universally acceptable identity management infrastructure in Nigeria”, adding that his agency will effectively key into this opportunity which will further showcase the database project in view of the calibre of personalities within the NIPR
