WANT to become the next video gamer to get a shot at a real racing career? Now you can do it from the comfort of your own home.
The new season of Nissan and Sony’s GT Academy competition is now live in Australia to all owners of Gran Turismo 6 on PlayStation 3 consoles.
It will require you to download and install a new update to GT6, which will make the competition’s free qualifying rounds available in the game.
The virtual competition is new to Australia this year, and has already produced several graduates from across the globe who have gone on to carve out racing careers in the real world.
The highest profile winner is Lucas Ordonez, who is now a respected sports and GT racer, finishing on the podium at the Le Mans 24 Hours last year, tested a V8 Supercar, and is racing for Nissan in the Japanese SuperGT series this year..
Are open-wheelers your thing? Jann Mardenborough isn’t a household name — yet — but is the first GT Academy winner to hop on the ladder to F1. He has been earmarked as a potential star of the future by Red Bull, who have signed him up to a driver development contract and placed him in a GP3 team for this season, two rungs below Formula 1.

HOW IT WORKS
You can now qualify for GT Academy by playing Gran Turismo 6 on a PlayStation 3, either from the comfort of your own home or at one of the ‘live’ events being run across the country this year.
To start with, you need to race through a series of online time trials in an array of differing Nissan machinery. The 14 fastest make it through to the next stage. Another 14 will be chosen from live events to be held around the country, including some trackside at V8 Supercars races.
The chosen 28 will go head to head in a National final. Along with pitting their virtual skills against each other, they will be put through a rigorous fitness challenge, a media test, as well having a steer of a real Nissan sportscar.

The field will then be cut down to the best six, who will fly to England for the final phase at the legendary Silverstone circuit.
The Final Selection Round sees our hopefuls go up against 24 other competitors from domestic GT Academies around the world, going through what they call “Race Camp”.
The winner gets the chance to become a real-life racer, with a shot at a seat in a factory Nissan racecar at the Dubai 24 Hours in 2015.
The GT Academy qualifying update is available to access now on GT6 and can be played until 16:59 Australian Eastern Standard Time on Monday 16 June 2014. It is available to anyone with a PSN (PlayStation®Network) ID and a copy of Gran Turismo 6.
